The Struggles of Remembering Your Passwords
The Forgot Password Cycle
Do you remember, when you created your first email account?
Well, what I can remember is that many years ago I went to a cyber cafe to open my gmail account. For the first time of course! After it was successfully created, I noted down the password on a paper and carried it home. And that’s where it all started! The game of passwords.
Years later, now it feels like passwords are my ultimate frenemy. They’re supposed to protect me, but they seem to be more interested in making me question my own memory.
I mean, who hasn’t stared at a login screen, trying to remember what was the password?!
I’m convinced that passwords exist to remind us everyday, that no matter how many diplomas we collect, only a few alphabets and numbers are enough to make us feel like we’re failing at life.
Too Many Passwords to Remember
Well, I’ve got passwords for everything. Probably you have them too. Unless you are a saint who stays away from the digital world.
I have one password for my email, another for my bank account, a different one for social media, and yet another for that obscure streaming service I signed up for during a particularly desperate content drought.
And how can I forget about the work passwords, which seem to change every other week.
Sometimes I feel like, we are a part of some memory game which is practiced routinely.
Why Do I Always Forget?
I’ve read somewhere that our brains aren’t wired to remember random strings of characters.
They crave patterns, stories -basically something to hold onto.
But who would explain that to the security experts who insist on passwords with at least one uppercase letter, a number, a symbol, and perhaps a hieroglyph or two.
Then comes the most annoying part- “you’ve used this password before” message.
Yes, I know, I used it in the past , but it’s the only one I can remember!
Survival Tips (Because You’ll Need Them)
Now, if you’re somebody like me, you’ve probably reached a point where you’ve started recycling passwords, despite all the warnings.
Or maybe you’ve accepted all the chaos and written them down somewhere you’ll definitely forget.
Well, jokes apart! You can consider using a password manager—if you can remember the master password, that’s it.
Or else, you can simplify your life by turning on biometric login.
Lastly, if everything else fails, then remember that you always have the last option – “Forgot Password” link.
The Password Predicament
I have come to understand, that passwords are just another hurdle in our digital lives.
They’re annoying, for sure, but if you think it in a different way, it is also a reminder that they’re all in this together.
Everyone struggles, everyone forgets, and everyone, at some point, will scream at a screen in frustration( after seeing the “you’ve reached the maximum number of failed attempts for a password change” message).
So next time if you forget your password, take a deep breath, hit “reset,” and simply laugh .Because in the end, the real password of life is -sense of humor.
